About Us

Location History

We chose to build a restaurant here because many years ago my dad, “Happy Harry” Gershman opened a restaurant in a small, two story structure, right here, next to the Empire Theatre, at 5th and DeMers. The family recalls that he was very proud that his restaurant served “filets from Chicago!” He eventually replaced the restaurant with his first liquor store, Central Package Store, in this exact location, in 1944.

In 1970 Urban Renewal demolished the original building, which had been built at the turn of the century. In its place the Internal Revenue Service constructed and occupied the building you are in today. We purchased it in 2018. Our 3-year renovation involved gutting it, raising the roof 7 feet, building internal brick walls, and installing state-of- the-art HVAC, lighting, plumbing, kitchen and bar equipment. In other words, everything you see is new but for the exterior brick.

Building a classic 1940’s style steakhouse on this very corner was “rounding the circle” for me and my family after 77 years. We hope you enjoy your evening GOING BACK IN TIME and thank you for joining us.

Came in on a late Saturday afternoon to enjoy a cocktail and a burger. I don’t know much about roaring twenties, but after dining here, I think I have a pretty good idea. My cocktail of choice was the Socialite. It a mixture of honeydew melon vodka, orange oleo saccharum, baked cranberry shrub, lime, up. Refreshingly sour is the best way I can describe it. I found that that Harry’s salad was crisp and delightful and love the texture of the complementary bread. Crispy crust with a soft and chewy inside. The fries that accompanied the steakhouse burger were thin and crispy, just the way I like them, however, they were on the salty side. And the burger, ehh. It’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s just hard to beat a 5 dollar burger basket. The service was prompt and polite, and I enjoyed the iconic atmosphere. But next time I would choose a different entree. And you might want to plan ahead as the bar top is open seating only, all other tables require a reservation (on-line).read more

Dining here will take you back to a time of speakeasies and cigar lounges. The ambiance is incredible and perfect for any special occasion. Service was excellent! Expect a full coursed dining experience. I had the filet and it was absolutely melt-in-your mouth tender. I would also highly recommend the Lime in the Coconut drink. Aside from being cleverly named it was the perfect booze to sweet ratio. And save room for dessert! The New York cheesecake is big enough for two, but after one bite of the rich, creamy slice I decided not to share.read more

I loved this beautiful dining experience from the very first step inside the door! The booths are warm red leather and private. Our waiter was very warm and had a fun personality. The main bartender made a trip to our table to make a special martini for me. The bread basket was very nice and flavorful. Our Harry’s salads were especially nice and colorful with wonderful blue cheese dressing. I ordered the walleye and it was perfect.I will be happy to return to this fine dining establishment. Manager Matt is accommodating to guests needs. Thank you for a pleasant dinner. I’ll love coming back!read more

We had a fantastic experience dining at Harry’s. The staff has been very well trained. Our server, Emily was amazing. Our large group of 10 kept her on her game. It was great to have Matt (manager/owner) stop by our table several times during our two and half hour stay. It wasn’t hard to find a good drink choice on the cocktail or beer menu or the wine list. The prices on the food menu were reasonable. We had one steak that was cooked more than requested. It was whisked away and a replacement brought quickly. No questions. The rest of our orders were well presented. And tasty. Most talked about were the creamed leaks, the brussel sprouts, and the creme brûlée. Harry’s will be a successful addition to Grand Forks. It appears to be operated by people who want to provide an excellent dining experience to patrons. We will be back.read more
